The Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) hosted a special charity tea auction in Guwahati, bringing together Assam’s tea industry and a social welfare initiative aimed at supporting the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. The auction featured a selection of premium teas from Assam and Darjeeling, with the proceeds from the event set to be donated to the relief fund.
The special auction included a range of teas, covering orthodox and organic varieties as well as CTC, Matcha and Darjeeling teas. The initiative provided a platform for premium tea producers and buyers to participate in a purpose-driven auction while highlighting the diversity and commercial value of India’s tea sector.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attended the programme and highlighted the objective behind organising the special auction. According to the Chief Minister, the proceeds generated through the auction would be contributed to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, linking the state’s established tea auction infrastructure with an effort to support relief and welfare activities.
The event also underlines the economic importance of the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre, one of the key platforms associated with Assam’s tea trade. Tea auctions play an important role in the broader value chain by connecting tea producers with buyers and supporting commercial activity around cultivation, processing, packaging, transportation and distribution.
Assam has a long-standing position in India’s tea industry, with its tea estates producing a wide range of varieties that serve both domestic and international markets. The state’s tea sector supports a large network of producers, workers, traders and allied businesses, making tea an important contributor to the regional economy.
The charity auction adds a social responsibility component to this established commercial ecosystem. By directing auction proceeds towards the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, the initiative demonstrates how business platforms and industry institutions can contribute to public welfare while continuing to promote the region’s products and economic strengths.
Beyond its charitable objective, the event also draws attention to the growing market for speciality and premium teas. Assam and Darjeeling teas have strong recognition in domestic and global markets, while speciality varieties are increasingly being positioned as premium products with distinct origins, production methods and consumer appeal.
The GTAC charity auction therefore represents a convergence of tea commerce, premium products and social responsibility, highlighting the broader role that Assam’s tea industry can play in both economic activity and community-oriented initiatives.
