Mizoram is set to host the North East Bankers’ Conclave in Aizawl on October 13, bringing together key stakeholders from the banking and financial sectors to discuss ways to strengthen financial inclusion, credit access and economic growth across the Northeast. The conclave is expected to provide a platform for senior officials from northeastern states, banking institutions and financial agencies to deliberate on the region’s evolving economic and development requirements.
Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia is likely to attend the event as the chief guest. His expected participation highlights the Centre’s continued focus on strengthening financial infrastructure and improving access to banking services across the northeastern states.
The conclave is expected to focus on several issues linked to the region’s economic development, including improving the availability of institutional credit, expanding banking outreach, supporting entrepreneurs and businesses, and increasing financial inclusion in areas where access to formal financial services remains limited.
For the Northeast, stronger banking connectivity is particularly important as the region continues to see investments in infrastructure, tourism, agriculture, manufacturing, logistics and small and medium-sized enterprises. Easier access to formal credit can help businesses expand operations, invest in technology and infrastructure, and create additional employment opportunities.
The banking sector also has an important role to play in supporting emerging entrepreneurs and local enterprises across the region. Many businesses in the Northeast operate in sectors with significant growth potential, including agriculture and food processing, handicrafts, tourism, horticulture and services. Better access to financing and financial services can help these enterprises move towards larger markets and strengthen regional value chains.
The North East Bankers’ Conclave is therefore expected to serve as a platform for discussions between governments and financial institutions on addressing some of the region’s specific banking and credit requirements. Deliberations at the event could also help identify opportunities to improve coordination between state governments, banks and other financial institutions.
The event comes at a time when the Northeast is receiving increasing attention as an emerging economic corridor connecting India with neighbouring countries and Southeast Asian markets. Strengthening financial institutions and improving access to capital will be an important part of supporting this broader economic transformation.
With Mizoram hosting the conclave, the event is expected to place particular emphasis on the financial and economic opportunities available across the region while encouraging greater participation of banks in supporting local businesses, entrepreneurs and development projects.
